Noach: build an ark, then open the window
Noah spent a year sealed in a box with his family and every animal on earth. A short thought on the portion — and on what he did first when the rain stopped.
The word for Noah's ark is teivah. The Baal Shem Tov pointed out that teivah also means "word" — and read God's instruction, "come into the teivah," as an instruction to us: when the flood of the week rises around you, step into the words. A prayer, a page of Torah, a blessing over bread. Words can hold a whole family above water.
Then the window
But notice what Noah does when the rain stops. He doesn't stay inside where it's safe. He opens the window and sends out a dove — and then he steps out and plants a vineyard. An ark is for the storm. It isn't for living in.
Shabbat is our weekly ark: twenty-five hours sealed off from the flood of email. And Saturday night is the window. The question this week is simple: what will you carry out of the ark with you?
